NOTE

We recommend 40g of chocolate and 12oz/340ml of milk for our standard size drink. If you prefer a shorter drink you can use 25g of chocolate and 8oz/230ml milk.

If you are not using our chocolate drops, make sure the chocolate is in chopped into small pieces to help it melt.

There are of course other measurements/guides for making hot chocolate at home from chocolate chips… Read on for ours!

Top Tips to consider

You can use any milk to make our hot chocolate, but to work well with our chocolate drops we recommend our milk of choice - Oat Milk. We don’t believe substituting milk for hot water works in this recipe.

For a more authentic ‘Coffee With Soul’ hot chocolate, try using our ‘Foaming milk at home’ guide, here, to foam your milk before making your hot chocolate (Which is the only difference between this method and how we make our hot chocolates at our coffeeshops) However it is important not to pour the foam on to the melted chocolate drops (leave the foam until the end of the pour) otherwise the milk and chocolate don’t incorporate very well.

Method

  • Weigh out your chocolate drops, put these into the warm EMPTY cup

  • Carefully cover the chocolate with hot water straight from the boil from the kettle. Leave this steeping to warm the chocolate chips. You can cover this with a saucer or similar if you wish to keep more of the heat in

  • Meas Measure out your milk and heat gently on the hob/stovetop in your pan (not too high heat or you’ll risk burning the milk, stir regularly with the wooden spoon) or in the microwave in a microwaveable jug. Check the temperature regularly (to avoid overheating it) with the probe until it is hot enough. Ideally the milk should be 65-70 degrees Celsius

  • Pour the hot water carefully off the choc chips and quickly add some hot milk on top, just enough to cover the chocolate, before the heat is lost

  • Mix together with a the teaspoon until it is a smooth paste, the chocolate should be fully incorporated into the milk. (This might be considered the most difficult step but it’s really important; mix carefully and quickly before the heat is lost. If you have a small whisk this could also be used)

  • Pour more milk on top, about a third of the cup’s volume and mix again with the spoon

  • Then pour the rest of the milk on top. (If you have foamed your milk, now is the time to pour with some foam on top, pour low/close to the drink to ensure the foam floats)

  • Dust with cocoa, edible flowers, cinnamon or whatever you wish

  • Enjoy your hot chocolate at home!

On the hob Method

  • Optional - Preheat your drinking cup of choice by pouring some hot water in it and leaving it for about 30-60 seconds. Pour this away before pouring your drink

  • Measure out your milk, add about a third to the pan and heat gently on the hob/stovetop (not too high heat or you’ll risk burning the milk, stir regularly with the wooden spoon)

  • Weigh out your chocolate drops, add these to the pan on the hob when the milk starts to warm

  • Mix mix mix with the wooden spoon! You want the chocolate to melt and be fully incorporated into the milk, if it’s too difficult to mix smoothly, add more milk

  • Add the rest of the milk and gradually bring it up to temperature stirring continuously; check the temperature regularly (to avoid overheating it) with the probe until it is hot enough. Ideally the chocolate should be 65-70 degrees Celsius

  • Pour your drink into your cup

  • Dust with cocoa, edible flowers, cinnamon or whatever you wish

  • Enjoy your hot chocolate at home!
